A prisoner was found with bomb-making materials Friday at the Anamosa State Penitentiary.
That’s according to the Iowa Department of Corrections, which confirmed the information with The Des Moines Register on Saturday. The Department of Criminal Investigation says its agents received “credible information” that inmates were planning to detonate a device sometime on Friday. A check of one suspect’s cell turned up household materials that could be used to make a bomb, if combined with other substances. The DOC stresses that the materials are not dangerous on their own.
Investigators are trying to determine how the prisoner was able to get the substances into his cell, how he was able to hide them, and whether or not he had accomplices. No charges have yet been filed.
The incident comes just two months after two Anamosa prison workers were killed by a pair of inmates during a botched escape attempt.
