An Iowa City man accused of assaulting the mother of his children last month has been arrested.

Police say the incident occurred on April 19th just before 7pm at a residence on Broadway Street. Officers were called to the address for what was reported as a domestic incident. Upon arrival, they met with the victim, who is the girlfriend of 28-year-old Fermin Lagos of Tracy Lane. She stated that Lagos insulted her in front of their four children. She threw a T-shirt at Lagos, which reportedly upset him to the point where he grabbed a broom and swung it at the woman, bending the handle in half.

The woman also told police that Lagos had been smoking marijuana in the apartment before they arrived.

A warrant was requested for the man’s arrest, and a follow up visit at the scene of the alleged incident turned up Lagos. Wednesday night just after 6 o’clock, an officer was greeted at the door by one of the children, who said that Lagos had just run out the back door. The officer saw Lagos fleeing and have several commands to stop. After a brief chase, Lagos was caught and arrested.

A search subsequent to arrest turned up a small plastic cup containing loose marijuana and a pipe with burnt marijuana inside. Lagos reportedly admitted to possession of the marijuana.

He has been charged with Domestic Assault 2nd offense and Child Endangerment for the April incident, and Interference with Official Acts, Marijuana possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia during the subsequent arrest.

If convicted on all counts, Lagos could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
