A Coralville man in a vehicle stopped on a traffic violation has been arrested after police say he was in possession of a stolen firearm.

Iowa City police stopped a vehicle for running a red light on Highway 1 Monday just before 11 pm.  While the vehicle came to a stop, an officer observed 19-year-old Davoin Sanders, a passenger in the back seat with two other passengers, hand something to the middle passenger. Upon contact, an odor of marijuana was detected.

During a subsequent search of the occupants and their property, a Smith and Wesson handgun was found in the purse of the middle passenger. She allegedly admitted that Sanders gave her the gun to put in her purse.

Sanders was arrested and charged with Trafficking in Stolen Weapons, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
