Coralville Police say that the 16-year old driver who fatally struck a cyclist last month was speeding and using social media at the time.

The Gazette reports Chief Shane Kron announced Monday that the teen faces a vehicular homicide charge from the April 6th incident.

Just before 6am that day, the girl was heading southbound in the 2400 block of 12th Avenue when she hit 36-year-old cyclist Andrew Pavlovec. He was in the traffic lane and using a headlight and taillight at the time. Kron said the driver was “actively using a social media application” and was going over 20 miles an hour over the posted 35 miles per hour speed limit.

The teen was taken to the Linn County Detention Center on May 3rd but is no longer in custody.

Pavlovec was an employee of Centro Manufacturing and volunteered as a suicide hotline and sexual abuse counselor. He is survived by his wife and two sons. His obituary said that he was an organ donor and his liver, heart, kidneys and lungs were donated after his death.

A Vehicular homicide conviction caused by reckless driving is a Class C felony punishable by a prison term of up to ten years.
