An Oxford man apparently had big plans for his 18th birthday, but getting arrested for drunk driving was likely not among them.

The Iowa State Patrol pulled over a 2007 Ford Taurus being driven by Kain Wallace of West State Street just after 5pm Thursday on the 1600 block of Scott Boulevard in Iowa City. The officer wrote in his arrest report that he pulled the car over after Wallace locked his brakes, jerked to the right and jumped a curb. Those inside the vehicle said the front seat passenger bumped into Wallace while putting a sweatshirt in the back seat, causing the accident.

A search of the vehicle turned up a 12 pack of Coors Light in the back seat under the sweatshirt. A 24 pack of Michelob Ultra was found in the trunk. Both cases of beer were still cold.

Wallace, who turned 18 that day, allegedly smelled of ingested alcohol and showed signs of intoxication. Police say Wallace had a “meltdown” when confronted with this information, broke his sunglasses, and told the arresting officer to just take him to jail if he didn’t believe him.

Wallace allegedly struggled with field sobriety tests. His blood alcohol content was measured at .109%.

When asked again how much he’d had to drink and when, Wallace allegedly said he had two Red, White and Blue Smirnoff Ices around 12:45pm. Another BAC taken at University Iowa Police headquarters nearly two hours after the initial traffic stop still registered a .089%.

Wallace was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age and Failure to Maintain Control.
