Iowa has lifted the pause on distributing the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

The move comes following the announcement Friday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have lifted its pause on allocating the vaccine.

The pause was recommended after reports of six cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals following administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were not affected.

The CDC and FDA have since determined that any risks associated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are far outweighed by the benefits. Both agencies say available data suggests that the chance of blood clots occurring is very low, but they will remain vigilant in continuing to investigate the risk.
