A domestic abuse suspect allegedly jumped out a window and suffered a compound fracture trying to escape Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies.

According to arrest records, deputies were called to an address on West Marengo Road in Tiffin just before 8:30am on November 1st for a man and woman fighting. Arriving officers found the alleged victim with blood and her hands and face, but she was unwilling to cooperate. The woman was also suffering from cuts on her left cheek, the side of her nose and the corner of her mouth. She also had a broken front top tooth, although she claimed she ran into a wall. Investigators also discovered blood smears on the inside and outside of the apartment door, and on multiple walls inside the residence.

Deputies eventually found 33-year-old Robert Smith III of Triple Crown Lane in Iowa City lying on the ground outside. Smith had suffered a compound fracture to his leg after he allegedly tried to escape deputies by jumping out a bedroom window. The escape attempt was caught on nearby surveillance video.

The alleged victim told deputies that she and Smith had moved in together about a month ago.
Smith is charged with Domestic Abuse Assault With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum of two years in prison.
