Coralville city councilor Meghan Foster has announced plans to run for a vacant seat on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

Elected in 2017, Foster serves on the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPO) and the Johnson County Juvenile Justice and Youth Development Policy Board. She was also part of the East Central Iowa Council of Governments in 2020, in addition to serving on other planning committees for the city.

Foster is joined in the race by fellow Democrat Scott Finlayson. Finlayson has been an assistant county attorney, worked in the County Attorney’s civil division, and in 2012 worked as deputy county treasurer.

The supervisor vacancy occurred when Supervisor Janelle Rettig resigned last Sunday. Johnson County Treasurer Tom Kriz, Recorder Kim Painter and Auditor Travis Weipert agreed at a special Friday meeting that a special election was preferable to appointing a replacement.

Democratic and Republican candidates must file a certificate of nomination by convention and affidavit of candidacy. Persons interested in running as a Democrat or Republican should contact the parties. Other candidates may file with 250 signatures and affidavit of candidacy.

The filing deadline for candidates is Friday, May 14th. The special election is set for June 8th.
