An Iowa City man arrested on an outstanding warrant was charged with drug possession Thursday night not once, but twice.
Police stopped 34-year-old Myron Porter of East Washington Street just past 9 pm for allegedly driving at 84 miles an hour in a 70 mile per hour zone as he traveled southbound on Interstate 380 near the 7 mile marker. A check of records showed that Porter was wanted on a warrant out of Davenport, and he was arrested.
Porter was asked if he had any illegal substances on him, and he reportedly stated that he had a bag of meth in his pocket. Two bags were recovered; one with the meth and the other containing pills that contained a prescription drug. Porter allegedly claimed a friend gave him the pills. A subsequent search of the vehicle authorized by Porter reportedly turned up a meth pipe under the driver’s seat.
Porter was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd offense, Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Johnson County Jail for booking.
After the officer left, he was called back by jailers about Porter. They allegedly found another bag of white powdery substance in his sock. The deputy on scene reportedly told the officer that he asked Porter if he had anything illegal on his person, but he said he didn’t.
Porter then was charged with Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Institution. If convicted on all counts from Thursday’s incidents, he could be sentenced to up to over eight years in prison.
