An Iowa City woman was sent to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after an alleged domestic assault last week.

Police say the incident occurred just before 2pm on the 17th at the Muscatine Avenue home of the victim. She and 29-year-old Mosab Abdalla of South Riverside Court are engaged to be married but don’t yet live together. According to the woman, Abdalla suspected that she was having sexual affairs with other men, so he reportedly confronted her physically.

The woman told police that she was punched repeatedly and sustained a bruised lip. During the alleged assault, a wall mirror was broken, cutting the woman on a hand and under her left arm. Abdalla had left the premises before police arrived; the woman was taken to the UIHC for treatment. A relative of the woman reportedly was a witness to the assault.

When interviewed by investigators, Abdalla allegedly admitted to fighting with the victim, but claimed he was only defending himself. He also reportedly said that he didn’t mean to injure his fiancé.

A warrant was requested for Abdalla’s arrest, and he was taken into custody on Wednesday night. He’s been charged with Assault causing Bodily Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year.

A no-contact order was requested between the couple.
