Johnson County officers have scheduled a special meeting to discuss a vacancy on the Board of Supervisors. Officers include County Treasurer Tom Kriz, Recorder Kim Painter and Auditor Travis Weipert.

Supervisor Janelle Rettig announced her resignation from the board on Sunday. 21 months remain on her current term.

The officers will meet at 2pm Friday to discuss how to fill the vacancy. Members of the public are encouraged to join the meeting in one of two ways: you may use your computer to listen to or view the live meeting through an internet connection by entering bit.ly/jocomeeting into your browser; or join telephonically by dialing (319) 688-8121 five minutes prior to, or during, the meeting to join via conference call. Public comments related to any item on the meeting agenda may also be emailed to Ntomkovi@johnsoncountyiowa.gov for distribution to Committee members before or during this meeting.

The County can either appoint a replacement Supervisor, or hold a special election. An election can also be forced by citizen petition.

Johnson County Democrat Scott Finlayson has already announced his intention to run for the open spot, if a special election is held.

Finlayson has been an assistant county attorney, worked in the County Attorney’s civil division, and in 2012 worked as deputy county treasurer.
