Over 1000 students and staff are currently in quarantine in the Iowa City Community School District, and health officials are concerned that students are transmitting the virus among one another.
The school’s dashboard Saturday morning shows 141 students either confirmed positive or presumed positive for coronavirus, and 3 staff members. That has necessitated the closure of 9 classrooms; those students are learning virtually until their quarantine period has completed.
City High has 21 confirmed and 14 presumed positive students. There are currently 239 students in quarantine there. Northwest Junior High has 12 confirmed cases and less than 10 presumed positive, but have the most in quarantine with 313.
In total, 984 students and 27 staff members are currently in quarantine.
Community Health Division Manager Sam Jarvis says that there’s a concern there may be transmission in classrooms and are monitoring the situation using contact tracing. Earlier this week, District Communications Director Kristin Pedersen told the Gazette in an e-mail that the increase is due in part to returning to 100 percent on-site learning and the inability to maintain social distancing measures.
