An Iowa City man has been charged with his third OWI after backing into a patrol car Thursday night.

Police say 47-year-old Raynard Woods of Spring Ridge Drive was observed failing to maintain his lane in the 200 block of Highway 6 East around 10:30 Thursday night. The officer initiated a traffic stop, and Woods pulled over. He then started reversing his vehicle. The officer used his airhorn to alert Woods that he was reversing into the squad car, but the two vehicles collided.

Woods got out of his car and walked toward the officer. He was reportedly smelled strongly of ingested alcohol, had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and impaired balance. Woods showed significant impairment on field tests, and allegedly admitted to drinking one beer at 1 that afternoon. He refused PBT and Datamaster testing.

A check of driving records showed Woods having been revoked from driving.

He was taken into custody and charged with his third OWI and driving while revoked. If convicted on both counts, Woods could be sentenced to up to six years in prison.
