Iowa City man accused of assault on separated spouse

An Iowa City man was arrested Monday night after reportedly assaulting his separated wife in front of their four-year-old child.

The incident allegedly occurred at around 6:45pm on March 31st at the Fairchild Street residence they shared. 34-year-old Scott James and the woman were involved in an argument, and he was reportedly trying to take a belt from her with which to commit suicide.

James allegedly told the woman he was going to kill her and hit her in the back of the head several times. He is accused of doing this in front of the child, who told officers that he witnessed the altercation. The boy also told them that James broke an oven, a door, and other objects in a fit of rage.

The separated spouse complained of pain as a result of the alleged assault.

A warrant for James’ arrest was issued, and he was taken into custody Monday night. He’s been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, 1st degree Harassment, and Child Endangerment. If convicted on all counts, James could face up to five years in prison.
