Iowa City Police say a man wanted for an assault at a convenience store after he refused to wear a mask now faces charges that he attacked and threatened his live-in girlfriend.

29-year-old Hiram Nunez was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 3pm Tuesday. Police were called to Nunez’s residence in the Hilltop manufactured housing community just before 11:30 Tuesday morning after Nunez allegedly threatened his girlfriend with physical harm as he broke furniture. Nunez then allegedly threatened to kill the woman if she called the police. He then left the residence.

Nunez was also wanted for failing to appear at his March 1st initial court appearance on an Assault charge stemming from a January 24th incident at Kum & Go on The Coralville Strip. Coralville Police say Nunez was inside the convenience store without wearing a mask just after 4:15am. He was asked to leave, leading to an altercation. Nunez allegedly flashed hand signals and threatened the subject who asked him to leave, then later allegedly stuck his hand into the person’s vehicle, nearly striking the man.

Nunez is also facing Operating While Intoxicated and Possession of a Controlled Substance charges after he crashed his Acura into a cable barrier on southbound Interstate 380 near the 3 mile marker just after 12:30pm on March 9th. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says Nunez admitted to smoking marijuana and turned over a small amount of the drug to deputies at the scene.

If convicted on all current charges, Nunez faces a maximum of 26 months in jail.
