Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff Monday from sunrise to sunset in honor and remembrance of correctional employees killed during an escape attempt at the Anamosa State Penitentiary.

Lorena Schulte of Cedar Rapids and Robert McFarland of Ely were killed on Tuesday. Investigators say each died of blunt force trauma to the back of the head when they were attacked with hammers.

Schulte was a nurse at the prison, and McFarland was a correctional officer. Both will be laid to rest on Monday.

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flags at half-staff for the same length of time.
