An Iowa City woman was arrested after allegedly spitting on and kicking officers during an altercation with another person.

Police say the incident occurred at 1:44am Thursday in the 100 block of South Linn Street. 26-year-old Alexis Smith and another person were allegedly involved in an altercation, and an officer was in the process of arresting the other party when Smith got involved. She is accused of repeatedly attempting to approach the officer and the arrested party, and was belligerent and argumentative with officers on scene. When an officer blocked Smith’s path so that she could not get to the other party as he was being escorted by, she allegedly spit at the officer.

That led to the officer arresting Smith, and she reportedly resisted by pulling her hands away and thrashing about. She resisted multiple commands to stop and had to be forcibly put into handcuffs.  Smith further resisted attempts to search her, allegedly kicking officers and attempting to bite one. She also reportedly refused to walk to a squad car under her own power.

Alcohol was reportedly detected on her breath, and displayed impaired judgement. At one point, Smith referred to herself as “sober enough” and refused a post-arrest PBT.

Smith has been charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Interference with Official Acts, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all counts, she could be sentenced to up to 14 months in jail.
