An Iowa City man faces a host of charges after a trespass complaint against him.
Police say they were called to the Summit Bar on South Clinton Street just before 1:30am Wednesday for a complaint against 24-year-old Erik Henderson of Brown Street. He was located walking away from the bar, and was observed with bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, impaired balance, and was acting erratically. A witness alleged that Henderson had been behind the wheel of a black Chevy Malibu. When asked to identify himself, Henderson referred to himself as Jake Henderson and wouldn’t provide additional details.
Henderson also refused to complete field sobriety tests or a PBT, but a subsequent Datamaster test showed his blood-alcohol level at .121 percent.
When officers secured Henderson’s vehicle, a fanny pack that appeared to contain a heavy bulky item was observed on the driver’s side floorboard. Given that he had an Illinois Firearms Owner ID card on him when he was arrested, a probable cause search was conducted on the pack, and a loaded Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun was discovered.
Henderson didn’t have a carry permit and refused to answer questions on whether or not he had one. A check of his Johnson County address Henderson provided showed no permit on file.
He’s been charged with OWI 1st offense, Public Intoxication, Carrying Weapons, Possession of Dangerous Weapons while Intoxicated, and Providing False ID Information. If convicted on all counts, Henderson could be sentenced to over four years in prison.
