An Iowa City man was taken into custody over the weekend after allegedly attacking his fiancé.
Police got a 911 call from the woman Saturday just after 11pm, who said that 32-year-old Robert Leach of Taylor Drive had just beat her and left in her car. Upon arrival, the woman was crying and her entire face was bleeding and swollen. Five children were reportedly present at the residence the two shared.
The woman told police that she, Leach and a friend were upstairs in a bedroom arguing when Leach punched her in the face and knocked her to the ground. He then allegedly got on top of her and continued the attack, punching her approximately ten more times in the face. Leach then allegedly grabbed her throat with both hands and choked her. He then reportedly took her phone to keep her from calling 911 and left the residence in the woman’s car.
Leach was located a few blocks away in a park and was arrested. He denied assaulting the woman, who he recently became engaged with after a five month relationship.
Leach was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
A no-contact order was requested by the victim.
