A would-be Robin Hood faces charges that he robbed an Iowa City credit union so he could, in his words, give the money to “people in need”.

25-year-old Parker Hawkins of Iowa City was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 3:30 Friday afternoon on a charge of 2nd Degree Theft. Iowa City Police say Hawkins walked into the Green State Credit Union Muscatine Avenue branch just before 11:15am on February 20th and handed a teller a backpack. Hawkins allegedly told the teller to fill the backpack up with cash, and that she could call the police after he left. He left with $1,500 in cash.

Hawkins was developed as a suspect from security video, and an officer arrested him as he was observed walking into his Wayne Avenue apartment. He allegedly told investigators he took the money and gave it to “people in need” as he walked home. Hawkins is charged with 2nd Degree Theft, a Class D Felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.

Hawkins was also arrested on February 21st after he was allegedly stopped while driving a stolen vehicle in rural Johnson County.
