The pandemic can’t stop an annual tradition in Sutliff.

The 35th annual Sutliff Bridge Golf Classic is set for Saturday at the historic Sutliff Bridge. Last year’s event was held before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down many events and gatherings, and this year’s event comes as more Iowans have been inoculated against the virus.

Starting at noon Saturday there will be a contest for longest drive and closest to the pin, as golfers tee off at the east end of the bridge, sending balls across the Cedar River towards a pin on the west bank. A hole-in-one contest involves chipping a ball into a swimming pool tethered to the bridge and floating in the river. The final contest is the longest putt across the bridge.

Balls can be purchased inside Baxa’s Sutliff Tavern, located across White Oak Avenue from the bridge, with the money raised going to support scholarships for high school students in the Sutliff area. Eligible schools include Solon, West Branch, Mt. Vernon, Tipton and Lisbon.

Registration begins at 11am. The wearing of masks and social distancing are encouraged.

Saturday’s event is organized by the Sutliff Bridge Authority. For more information search for “Sutliff Bridge Golf Classic” on Facebook.
