An Iowa City man was arrested early Thursday after an alleged assault on his fiancé resulted in her finger being broken.

Police say the incident occurred Saturday morning at the Roberts Road residence the couple shares. 47-year-old Robert Sykes and the woman were engaged in an argument that turned physical when Sykes got angry.

He’s accused of putting his hand on his fiance’s face and shoving her head multiple times. He allegedly also grabbed the woman’s left ring finger, reportedly twisting it with such force that it broke.

The woman’s finger was swollen and obviously broken when arriving officers investigated the altercation. By that time, Sykes had gathered his belongings and left.

Sykes was booked at the Johnson County Jail just before 1:30am Thursday and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted. Sykes was served with a  no-contact order and released; an arraignment will be set at a later date.
