A Michigan man was taken into custody after a traffic stop allegedly yielded a loaded weapon.

27-year-old Demetrius Jones of Detroit was stopped near the intersection of Dubuque Street and Interstate 80 Thursday just before 7pm after observing a defective headlight on his Buick and an expired registration.

A police dog on scene alerted positive for drugs in the vehicle, and Jones reportedly admitted to having marijuana and a firearm inside. A subsequent probable cause search allegedly located a loaded handgun tucked between the driver seat and the center console.

Under Miranda, Jones reportedly said that someone in Michigan gave him the firearm for his personal protection while he moved to Nevada.

Jones is not permitted to own firearms due to a felony conviction on delivery of a controlled substance. He was arrested and charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, Carrying Weapons, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all counts, Jones could be sentenced to up to eight years in prison.
