A local transient who allegedly broke into an Iowa City apartment last month now faces new charges.

Online records show 24-year-old Michael Pennell was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 5am Sunday on charges of Assault on Peace Officers, Interference with Official Acts and Trespassing.

Pennell was originally arrested last weekend after allegedly forcing his way into an apartment on Broadway Street by breaking the door just before 11:15pm on February 26th. He knows the apartment owner, but does not stay there. The owner told Pennell to leave, but he allegedly refused.

Pennell also allegedly refused orders to leave from arriving officers, who had to resort to force to get him into handcuffs.

Pennell, who lists his address as Shelter House, was charged last weekend with Trespass Causing Damage Greater Than $300 and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.

There is no indication if the new charges are related to the previous incident or a different case. If convicted on those charges, Pennell faces a maximum of 14 months in jail.
