Johnson County HazMat team responds to I-80 accident

The Johnson County Hazardous Materials team responded to an accident Saturday morning on Interstate 80.

According to the group’s Facebook page, the HazMat team was called to a single-vehicle accident on I-80 between the I-380 and Tiffin exits just before 6am. Arriving team members confirmed three different chemicals leaking from the double trailer of a FedEx semi. All of the chmicals were either containd or neutralized and there was no contamination threat.

The HazMat team praised the Tiffin Fire Department for their quick response. FedEx has contracted with a cleanup crew to remove and restore the spill and debris.

The HazMat team also thanked the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa department of Transportation, and the Iowa City and the Solon Fire Departments for their assistance.

There was a secondary crash caused by the effort, leading the HazMat team to remind drivers to slow down and move over when they approach an accident scene.
