A North Liberty man who appointed himself as the mediator between police and two subjects fighting outside Panchero’s has been arrested on intoxication and marijuana charges.

According to arrest records, Iowa City Police were called to the restaurant’s South Clinton Street location just after 2:15 Friday morning for a fight outside. The fight was still active when officers arrived. Police say once the parties were separated, 29-year-old Devyn Denny of the Holiday Lodge manufactured housing community interjected himself into the incident, requesting that officers not make any arrests. Denny was not involved in the fight, but claimed to be a witness.

Police say Denny refused to answer their questions and was told he was free to go, but he refused to leave when ordered to do so.

Denny allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication, had difficulty walking, and refused breath and field sobriety testing.

Denny was arrested for Public Intoxication. A search of his person turned up a container with a small amount of marijuana and a one-hitter. He now faces additional charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all three charges, Denny faces a maximum of 14 months in jail.
