An Iowa City man faces numerous charges after an alleged assault on his wife of 11 years.

Police say they were stopped by a woman about 9:10pm Wednesday who was running in the street, requesting assistance. Using a language translation line to communicate with the woman, they learned that she has allegedly been assaulted by her husband at their Lakeside Drive residence.

The woman told police that 43-year-old Armos Ramzani Bakari punched and choked her, and allegedly told her, “You always embarrass me, you’re going to find out today, I’m gonna kill you.”

The incident reportedly occurred in front of their nine-year-old child, with their five year and six month old children within earshot in a separate room. The assault was allegedly so loud that Bakari’s brother heard from another room and came over to stop it before Bakari’s wife ran away.

Officers observed significant cuts and bruises on the woman’s neck, as well as a bruised shoulder and cut on her forearm.

Bakari was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Impeding Airflow, Domestic Abuse with Intent to Inflict Injury, 1st Degree Harassment, and three counts of Child Endangerment. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to fifteen years in prison.
