All three state-run Iowa universities are now making plans to hold in-person graduation ceremonies, days after a bill was introduced in the Iowa House that would force them to.
The bill, proposed by Wilton representative Bobby Kaufman, would require the University of Iowa, Iowa State, and the University of Northern Iowa to hold ceremonies during their regular times and allow graduates to invite at least two guests. If passed, it would bring tens of thousands of people to Iowa campuses.
At the beginning of the spring semester, both the University of Iowa and UNI announced plans to hold virtual graduations, as they did for the last two semesters. UNI has now announced that they will hold three modified graduation ceremonies in the Uni-Dome to supplement the virtual ceremonies previously announced. President Mark Nook issued a statement that encouraged graduates to participate in both.
ISU has also said they will hold modified in-person graduation ceremonies this spring. The larger ones will be held at Jack Trice Stadium while Hilton Coliseum will host other. Social distancing and masking will still be required.
As for the University of Iowa, they’ve announced their working on in-person graduation ceremonies that will also require social distancing and masking, They plan to release details no later than March 19th.
