An Iowa City man who attended a woman’s birthday party and allegedly left with some presents of his own was arrested on a host of charges including his third OWI.

According to arrest reports, officers attempted to stop 24-year-old John Orozco of Blazing Star Road near 12th Avenue and Ozark Ridge in Coralville around 5:30am after a report of a possible robbery. Orozco left the area at a high rate of speed, and the officer followed with activated lights and siren. Orozco was allegedly driving at 60 miles an hour and was still pulling away during the pursuit when he wrecked his vehicle at the intersection of First Avenue and Holiday road.

Orozco reportedly admitted to drinking, smelled heavily of ingested alcohol, and had other signs of intoxication. A blood sample was taken from him and authorities are awaiting the toxology report.

The victim of the alleged robbery arrived on scene, and asked police to check the contents of Orozco’s truck. He reportedly had been at her birthday party at a residence in the 600 block of 12th Avenue in Coralville earlier. After he left, she noticed an Iphone and Samsung phone, $90 in cash and her credit card were missing. She located all of her stolen items in the truck, except for the cash. The value of the two phones is around $1700.

Orozco was charged with the third OWI, as well as Eluding, Driving While Barred as a Habitual Offender, and 2nd Degree Theft. If convicted on all counts, Orozco could be sentenced to up to 17 years in prison.

Court records indicate that Orozco also violated probation terms on a Child Endangerment charge from 2018 and his 2nd OWI from 2019. They are both aggravated misdemeanors that could add another four years to his sentence.
