Alarms went off at a University of Iowa residence hall Wednesday night because of a suspected gas leak.
The Daily Iowan reports that the alarms were activated at around 10pm at Catlett Hall. Students were told to evacuate, and had to wait until the source of the suspected leak was located. To stay out of the cold, students were directed to Currier and Burge Halls until the situation was resolved.
The incident turned out to be a false alarm, as the source of the odor came from a piece of equipment emitting a gas-like smell, according to Media Relations Manager Haley Bruce’s email to the DI.
Students were able to return to the building after it was deemed safe to do so by building managers.
Catlett holds over 1000 students at capacity.
