After setting a sports betting record of $104.8 million in December, Iowans shattered that mark in January, according to new data from the state Racing and Gaming Commission.
Iowa’s casinos took in over $149.5 million in sports bets in 2021’s first month. Over 80 percent of that revenue came from bets placed online. January was the first month where bettors had to register in person at a casino before placing an online bet.
Commission authorities say when February’s numbers are released in a few weeks, the total amount of bets placed since it became legal in August 2019 will top one billion dollars. The current total is at $937 million, but with the Super Bowl bets, they say it’s a sure bet they’ll hit ten figures.
