Iowa City Police made an arrest during a robbery investigation Tuesday night…but it was the alleged victim who was taken into custody.
According to arrest records, 27-year-old Dwayne Eskridge of Kirkwood Avenue reported being robbed just before 7:45 Tuesday night at The Quarters apartments on Highway 6 East. Eskridge told investigators he was trying to but a gram of marijuana when the suspect stole $2,000 from him.
Police told Eskridge to leave the scene while they tried to contact the suspect. Instead, Eskridge allegedly made several threatening statements about handling the situation himself if the police didn’t do anything. Police say he also refused to leave the parking lot, remaining there for over an hour.
Eskridge allegedly refused to leave his vehicle when asked to do so by police. Officers reported his vehicle smelled of burnt marijuana. Eskridge was then escorted out of his car and charged with Trespassing and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 30 days in jail.
Eskridge made news last November when he allegedly hit another man in the leg with a crowbar on Mary Lane in North Liberty. He was also found in possession of Alprazolam, a prescription medication used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Eskridge did not have a prescription.
An assault with a weapon charge was dismissed. Eskridge, who has multiple previous drug convictions, is currently fighting a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance – 3rd or Subsequent Offense. A case management conference in that case is set for February 26th, with trial scheduled for April 20th.
