Overnight snow removal operations begin tonight on I-80 in Johnson, Cedar counties

(Iowa DOT news release)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Feb. 1, 2021 – The Iowa Department of Transportation District 6 maintenance office wants to alert the traveling public to a snow removal operation scheduled for overnight tonight, Monday, Feb. 1, from midnight to approximately 4 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, along parts of I-80 in Cedar and Johnson counties.

Recent heavy snows in the area has caused snow to build up against the median concrete barriers and the Iowa DOT will utilize a mobile snow removal operation to remove snow from the along the median and push it into the shoulder and ditch. The operation will utilize several snowplows operating in tandem to push the snow to the outside shoulder. This operation will cause slower moving traffic along I-80. Maintenance crews will be assisted in alerting motorists traveling through the area by Iowa DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement.

Crews will start the snow removal operation east of the Herbert Hoover Highway interchange and move west to the I-80/I-380 interchange. If time allows, crews will then work on clearing snow along the eastbound lanes of I-80 to the Herbert Hoover Highway interchange.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
