A Coralville man has been taken into custody and charged with assault after allegedly punching his long-time live-in girlfriend.
According to police, the incident occurred about 3pm Sunday at the couple’s 9th Street Apartment. 30-year-old Rontavius Farmer is accused of punching the woman in the face, leaving a gash on her lower lip.
The two have been in a relationship for over eight years and live together.
Farmer is awaiting a case management conference on a September possession incident. He was a passenger in a car stopped for speeding in Iowa City that a K9 alerted to drugs on. He was allegedly in possession of multiple vape devices, straws for narcotic inhalation, and a small baggie of Suboxone, a Schedule III controlled substance that he reportedly didn’t have a prescription for. Farmer allegedly claimed that the bag and the items found within were a friend’s, and that he had possession of it for multiple days. He faces a second offense possession of a controlled substance charge in that incident. A case management conference is scheduled for February 22nd.
The domestic assault charge from Sunday is a first offense, punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted. With the possession charge, Farmer faces up to three years.
