Iowa City Police have arrested a driver they say was not only over the legal blood alcohol content for driving, but had a level so high it could have put him into a coma.
Officers were investigating a motor vehicle accident at Highway 6 and Heinz Road just before 3:15 Friday morning when they took 25-year-old Nakyanzi Eyotar Malungu of North Summit Street into custody. Malungu allegedly admitted to drinking and driving, showed multiple signs of impairment, and registered a BAC of .313…almost four times the legal limit for driving.
A chart created by the Stanford University Office of Alcohol Policy and Education indicates a BAC over .30 could lead to unconsciousness and the brink of a coma.
Malungu’s BAC was down to a .269 by the time he took a later Datamatser test. He’s charged with Operating While Intoxicated.
