A Chicago man was arrested early Thursday morning in downtown Iowa City after being stopped for speeding.
Arrest reports indicate that 33-year-old Muhammad Ali was in the vicinity of Clinton and Burlington streets at 1:45am after an officer observed him speeding.
Upon contact, Ali reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, and had the odor of ingested alchohol. He denied drinking despite allegedly performing poorly on field sobriety tests. He refused all evidentiary blood, breath, or urine tests.
Ali was taken into custody on a OWI first offense charge. While being booked into the jail, Ali was asked if he had any contraband on his person and answered no. However, a deputy sheriff located a blue pill that was identified by its markings as alprazolam. Ali told the arresting officer that he did not take any drugs or medications, had no prescription, and the pill wasn’t in prescription packaging. He was then charged with possession of a controlled substance, and possession of contraband in a correctional institution. If convicted on all three charges, Ali could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
