An Iowa City man wanted on warrants for a series of incidents was taken into custody Sunday.
Police say 31-year-old Adam Gibson of Westwinds Drive was charged with Driving While Barred, Driving While License Suspended or Revoked, and Possession of Marijuana on July 18th of this year. He allegedly failed to appear for his arraignment on November 13th.
On October 17th, police say Gibson was at the Iowa City Menards with another person. They reportedly entered the store carrying empty bags and walked around the store for over 40 minutes. At one point, video footage showed Gibson grabbed a multi-tool off the shelf and concealed it in his jacket. The two abandoned their shopping cart and left the store without attempting to pay for the item. Later that day, the pair were stopped by police and charged on unrelated offenses, but a search of the vehicle found the multi-tool and another item that Menards personnel confirmed were missing from the store. The cost of the allegedly stolen items came to under $100.
On November 2nd, Gibson is accused of trying to drive his vehicle that had already been hooked up and reatdy to be towed off the ramp of a tow truck. Gibson reportedly had four vehicles in the lot of his apartment building, and property management contacted Iowa City Police to have them towed away. Gibson allegedly caused about $1000 damage to the tow truck’s tire lift and straps. He reportedly left the scene before officers arrived, but was identified by the property manager as the person involved.
Finally, Gibson is accused of shattering the patio door of an adjacent apartment on December 22nd. Authorities were dispatched to Gibson’s complex due to a suspicious vehicle. The ICPD and Johnson County Sheriff’s Department investigated, then cleared the scene. The complainant said that afterwards, Gibson climbed down the fire escape ladder shared with them, then climbed back up the ladder with a large bag. The complainant’s patio door was shattered in the process, causing $400 in damages.
Gibson was taken into custody Sunday night and charged with 5th degree theft, 3rd and 4th degree Criminal Mischief, and two counts of Driving While Barred as a Habitual Offender. If convicted on all counts, Gibson faces a sentence of over seven years in prison.
