A North Liberty man who tried to blame her live-in girlfriend’s injuries on her being intoxicated has been taken into custody on an assault charge.
Police were called by the woman during the noon hour Christmas Eve, who reported being assaulted by 52-year-old Luis Cautino Rovira at their residence on West Cherry Street. Arriving officers observed the woman was bleeding from three places on her forehead. She alleged that Cautino Rovira slammed her head into a metal stand and a bowl on a desk in the downstairs bedroom of their residence. Broken glass from the bowl was reportedly observed on the desk and chair.
Police say the woman’s injuries were consistent with her statements. She complained of a headache and was attended to by the Johnson County Ambulance Service but declined further hospital treatment. Police photographed her injuries.
When Cautino Rovira was confronted about the incident, he allegedly denied the assault and said that the woman fell and was intoxicated. She provided a PBT test, showing no alcohol in her bloodstream.
Cautino Rovira was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted. A no-contact order was requested between the two parties.
