Allegedly trying to steal a moped parked near his apartment has led to a Coralville man’s arrest.
Coralville Police say they observed 31-year-old Jonathan Hop of 9th Street tampering with a moped parked on the 900 block of 2nd Avenue just after 2:15 Saturday morning. Hop had allegedly removed parts of the moped and stripped some of the wiring in an attempt to start it without the keys. Police say Hop admitted to taking possession of the moped and trying to “kick start” it so he could drive it home.
The moped is valued at $2,000, and Hop allegedly caused less than $300 in damage.
Hop was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Theft and 5th Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of over five years in prison.
