A Coralville man faces several charges after getting involved in a motor vehicle accident early Thursday morning.
Police say the incident occurred in Iowa City near the intersection of Gilbert Street and Highway 6. 32-year-old Veronza Eason of 9th Street was involved in a crash just before 1:45 am. Eason and his passenger allegedly fled the scene on foot.
Officers caught up to the two, and Eason reportedly denied driving, despite evidence to the contrary. The vehicle, a 2016 Honda Fit, was registered to him, the reporting party described Eason as the driver, and his phone was found on the floorboard of the vehicle. His passenger reportedly suffered minor injuries in the crash.
While speaking with Eason, officers noted his bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, and the odor of ingested alcohol. He reportedly admitted to drinking and exhibited signs of intoxication during field testing. A Datamaster recorded his blood-alcohol level at .190 percent.
A check of Eason’s driving record showed him as being revoked.
He has been charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury, interference with official acts, driving while revoked, and public intoxication. If convicted on all counts, Eason faces a prison sentence of over three years.
