A shooting incident Wednesday afternoon in Cedar Rapids led to a child being sent to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

A release from the City of Cedar Rapids indicates that police were notified around 2:45pm of a shooting in the 200 block of 7th Street Southwest. Officers arrived to find a 4-year-old boy with a life-threatening gunshot wound.

First responders provided emergency medical care, and the boy was sent to Unity-Point St. Luke’s Hospital, then transferred to the UIHC.

Preliminary investigation into the incident leads police to believe that it was an unintentional shooting, but the investigation continues. No further information has been provided.

It was the second shooting incident in a 24-hour period; just before 3:30pm Tuesday, police were dispatched to an apartment on the 2100 block of Westdale Drive Southwest. They found an 18-year-old woman suffering from a serious gunshot wound. She too was sent to a local hospital before being transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Her condition has not been disclosed, and that investigation is ongoing.
