An Iowa City man has been arrested after two incidents where he threatened to kill his pregnant girlfriend.
Police say the first incident occurred at the Taylor Drive residence of 31-year-old Samontrell Burton on the evening of December 7th. Police were called to the scene on reports of a domestic disturbance. They were able to locate the alleged victim, but she didn’t want to talk to officers at the time.
She then requested officers back to the scene to discuss what happened. She told them that she and Burton, who have been cohabitating within the last year, were in a verbal argument. The woman retreated to a bathroom and locked the door. Burton allegedly grabbed a firearm and she said she could hear him chamber a round in the gun.
He threatened her from behind the door, and then reportedly broke it down, preventing the woman from leaving. She claims Burton said, “I’m going to effing kill you,” “You don’t know how bad I want to kill you,” and “I haven’t had this feeling in so long.” All the while, she says Burton was tapping the gun against a sink, with the barrel pointed towards her.
When questioned, Burton allegedly admitted to having a firearm on his person at the time of the incident, and the gun recovered matched the description given by the woman.
A warrant was issued for his arrest, and a no contact order was requested between the two.
The second incident happened seven days later, when Burton allegedly was outside the residence, yelling at the woman through her bedroom window. He is accused of threatening her, stating he would put a bullet through her head and the head of anyone she “moves on” with. He also said he would wake up in prison with a smile on his face knowing that she’s dead. A witness who was on the phone with the woman at the time of the incident told police that she heard the alleged threats.
Burton was arrested Wednesday afternoon. He’s charged with two counts of first degree Harassment, Domestic Abuse Assault while displaying a weapon, Assault with intent while displaying a weapon, and False Imprsionment. If convicted on all charges, Burton could be sentenced to a maximum of nine years in prison.
