An Iowa City man is facing weapons charges after he was allegedly involved in a chase with a woman.
Officers were dispatched to the area of Muscatine Avenue and Court Street on report of a man chasing and yelling at a woman around in the 1am hour Tuesday. They caught up with the two in the 1200 block of East Burlington Street, identifying them using the description provided by the reporting party. After running court records, 20-year old Deon Brand of the Town and Campus Apartments was detained for violating a no-contact order with the woman.
Officers learned that Brand was in possession of a handgun while he was chasing the woman. She provided a description of the weapon and told them where he tossed it during the chase. They found it exactly where she told them it would be.
Brand allegedly told officers that he had the handgun during the chase, but had taken it from her to prevent her from committing suicide. A check of the gun, a Black Taurus G2C, showed it had been reported stolen in Iowa City on October 29th.
Brand was previously convicted of 2nd degree Burglary, a Class D Felony. He was given a deferred sentence and three years of probation.
As such, Brand was charged with being in control of a firearm as a Felon, and Trafficking in Stolen Weapons. With the parole violation on the burglary charge, Brand now faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
