Transient accused of breaking cellphone during wet shelter dispute

A transient faces charges that he broke another client’s cellphone at Iowa City’s wet shelter.

Iowa City Police were called to the South Clinton Street shelter at 8:30 Thursday night for a verbal altercation between a man and a woman. An investigation determined that 28-year-old Jose Hernandez had grabbed the woman’s phone and thrown it on the ground, making it inoperable. The black Samsung had an estimated value of $65.

Hernandez admitted to breaking the phone. He’s charged with 5th Degree Criminal Mischief, a Simple Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of 30 days in jail.
