An Iowa City man was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after an alleged assault on a woman.

Police say the incident occurred in the 4pm hour at a Catskill Court residence. 26-year-old Antoine Bryant  of Wayne Avenue allegedly struck the woman several times in the face, body and head. During the assault, Bryant reportedly locked the door of the residence, stood in front of it, and told the woman she wasn’t allowed to leave.

Bryant then continued the alleged assault until she fell into a fetal position. He then is accused of putting his knee on her neck until she couldn’t breathe. He then reportedly told her he was going to murder her and she wasn’t going to leave.

Bryant was charged with Willful Injury causing Bodily Injury, False Imprisonment, and 1st degree Harassment. He could be sentenced to up to 8 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

A no-contact order was requested between the two involved parties.

Bryant has been in trouble with the law before. In May of this year, he was accused of violating a no-contact order and attacking officers who tried to arrest him after locating him locked in the laundry room of a residence. In September, he was charged with Driving While Barred after leaving the scene of a non-reportable vehicle accident. Bryant was given the opportunity to speak to authorities but never showed up or contacted them, and during their investigation, police discovered his barred status.
