IC man with history of domestic abuse arrested after Monday incident

An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after violating parole and allegedly assaulting his intimate partner.

Police say 21-year-old Anthony Alexander of Sherman Drive used his arms to choke the woman at an apartment on Wayne Avenue during the noon hour Monday. He allegedly grabbed her from behind while she was face down on a futon. The woman told police that she told Alexander she couldn’t breathe, but he reportedly choked her even harder, until she lost consciousness.

The woman reports that when she came to, Alexander was still choking her, but she was able to break free. She also received a cut finger and a bloody lower lip.

As officers arrived on scene, Alexander allegedly fled in a car and was not located. A warrant was issued for his arrest the next day, and he was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon. He’s been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault, 3rd or subsequent offense, and Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow.

Alexander previously received a Deferred Judgement for Domestic Assault in October of 2018 that was revoked the following June, and was convicted of second offense domestic assault and 3rd degree Burglary in June 2019.

If convicted on the new charges, Alexander faces a prison sentence of up to ten years.
