Allegedly hitting another man in the head with a piece of concrete in downtown Iowa City has led to a Marion man’s arrest.

19-year-old Donnell Carter of 5th Avenue was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 2:15 Saturday afternoon. Iowa City Police say that just before 9:30pm on July 8th, Carter ran up from behind the victim as the man was walking westbound on the 100 block of East Burlington Street, then jumped into the air and hit the man in the back of the head with a chunk of concrete. The victim received a deep laceration on the back of his head.

Police say Carter later admitted to hitting the man in the head with the concrete, claiming it was an act of self-defense. But the incident was caught on surveillance video, which shows the attack appeared to be unprovoked.

Carter is charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
