Allegedly firing an air pistol at another man during an attempted home invasion has led to charges against an Iowa City resident.
The alleged incident happened at a house on the 800 block of Gilbert Court just before 10:45 on the night of December 3rd. Iowa City Police say 32-year-old Daniel Nichols of North Mount Vernon Drive arrived at the residence with the intent to physically assault a man who lived there. After pounding on the alleged victim’s door, police say Nichols hid in the shadows until the man answered, then tried to force his way inside the house. The man was able to quickly shut the door and lock it before Nichols could get in.
Nichols allegedly shouted, “You bastard” before firing two shots from an air pistol at the window the victim was standing behind, causing it to shatter. Nichols then fled the scene.
The resident was able to identify Nichols by his voice. Nichols was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 9:30 Saturday night and charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, 2nd Degree Harassment and 5th Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over three years in prison.
Last December Nichols was sentenced to 30 days in jail with all but seven days suspended after he threatened to kill his wife and the man with whom he thought she was having an affair after she said she was divorcing him.
