Allegedly choking his domestic partner after the two threw shoes at each other during a fight has led to a Coralville man’s arrest.

Coralville Police say the alleged victim tried to leave the couple’s apartment on the 400 block of 6th Street around 3am on December 9th when 27-year-old Alexander Mullenix blocked the door. The victim threw a shoe at Mullenix, who responded by throwing two shoes back at the person.

Police say Mullenix then pushed his partner down to the ground and put his hands around the alleged victim’s neck. The partner told police they were eventually able to remove Mullenix’s hands from their neck, but he still prevented them from leaving. The alleged victim later told police they found it difficult to breathe for a period of time after the reported attack.

Mullenix was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 3am Sunday and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow, Domestic Abuse Assault – 2nd Offense and False Imprisonment. If convicted on all charges, Mullenix faces a maximum of four years in prison.
