A “snow day” used to mean a day off from learning for students in the Iowa City Community School District. But the COVID-19 pandemic has led district officials to realize students don’t need to be inside a classroom to learn.
The Iowa City district has announced on its web site that going forward, what were once days off for students will now be “virtual learning days”. During times of high COVID-19 positivity rates, school districts are allowed to petition the state for two-week waivers allowing for 100% at-home learning. After a few weeks of online learning, district officials realized they can use the method on a day-by-day basis in case of inclement weather. The district says “snow days” will now be known as “virtual learning days” going forward.
The district will provide Grab & Go Meals at the District’s designated sites when virtual learning days are necessary.
The district will inform parents of virtual learning days via the district’s Facebook page, Twitter account, Instagram account and through the district’s app. KCJJ will also announce them whenever they are issued.
